NG 286

And... we're back; I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas.  New game 286 is now available

Round 1: V L H C C D E O I

My selection: CHOICE
Best: CLICHÉD

Round 2: R M I K E I T P L

My selection: LIMPET
Best: IMPERIL

Round 3: Target 849 from 100 75 1 6 8 9

My selection: 849 = 8*(100 + 6) + 1

Round 4: M A I I S R N U S

My selection: RAINS
Best: RAISINS

Round 5: E N S A E P T C A

My selection: CATENAE

Round 6: Target 405 from 5 7 6 2 2 4

The target is unreachable; one off is the best on offer.

My selection: 406 = 7*(6*2*5 - 2)  [1 off]

Round 7: T S O E O N U H W

A minor trap here: TOWNHOUSE is tempting (and I had it written down within time) but a little thought suggests that the Macquarie would treat this as two words only.  That turns out to be the case, so there is no nine here.

My selection: OUTSHONE

Round 8: Target 570 from 25 6 1 3 1 8

My selection: 570 = 3*8*(25 - 1) - 6

Round 9: MELD PLUME

My selection: PUMMELLED (8.5s)

Just realised that I should have used the extra I for MILKIER. Grrrr.

CAPSTAN was excellent, Mike. And yes, it would have been nice to see MILKIER within time.

Merry christmas everyone,

1. VOICED
2. MILKIER (not sure if valid)
3. 849 = 8*(100 + 6) + 1
4. SIMIANS
5. CAPSTAN
6. 1-away: 404 = 2*(5*6*7 - 2*4)
7. HONEST (saw TOWNHOUSE later, would have risked it)
8. 570 = 3*8*(25 - 1) - 6
9. PUMMELLED - 1.7s

Yes, MILKIER is valid. (I found it after time, but IMPERIL seemed like a nicer word to declare as best.) Nice work with SIMIANS (another word I found after time) and CAPSTAN, Victor.

1. coiled
2. permit
3. 8x(100+6)+1=849
4. X unarms (don't think it's a verb, should be 'disarms')
5. canapes
6. [(6x7)-2]x(5x2)+4=404 (1 off)
7. soothe
8. (8x3-1)x25 -(6-1)=570
9. pummelled (8.7s)

Happy New Year!

The good news is that UNARMS gets the nod -- UNARM is listed as meaning "to disarm" (and some other ones that I forgot to pay attention to). Nice game!
