Sam, as an aside, I'm a fan of that calculation you did on Letters and Numbers for 821-25, 50, 75, 100, 6, 4. So with the benefit of a bit more experience playing on this site, I thought I would have a go (as I did not remember the other contestant's method). I actually got it within time using 6*(100+50)-75-4=821 (not used on the episode). Geoff, I was going to make a comment on your previous listings but I did not know where it was.

Thanks Mike, I've seen the YouTube clip you posted. It's a shame yours didn't go up first (in that the video quality is better than the version that was posted immediately and has the most hits).

It was disappointing when I realised that 821 was 825-4, as there are a bunch of straightforward ways to solve that. A target of 827 would have been better: then the fancy solve would have been the only method possible.

1. FURRIEST
2. STAINED
3. 953 = (8+1)*100 + 50 + 6/2
4. GLITCH
5. HALOES
6. 584 = (75 - 50/25)*8
7. BATON
8. 437 = 7*75 - 100 + 8 + 4
9. UNWORLDLY - 7.1s

Sam, yes I see that it wasn't as difficult as I thought. And to make matters worse, my calculation for round 8 above is wrong. I still muck up my 75 times tables!

Another aside, not numbers but letters, regarding Sam's intransigence yesterday on my use of The Dog Dictionary for WALKIES(!) Let me introduce you to Uncle Turbokov, the 19th century compiler of said dictionary. I believe Geoff is reviewing its use here as I type.
By the way, Happy New Year too!

Mike: I recall that episode as having Sam and Daniel in it, which meant it must be a final. I guessed at the right episode number first up -- it was episode 398.

And on the other front, I note that the Macquarie does list WALKIES. It's a good find.

Hmm, I shouldn't have rejected WALKIES (checked an incomplete word list).
