Great work with superman, Mike. Incidentally, batman and spiderman are also valid words. Your Round 8 is super-wrong, however.
1. CONFER 2. ABIDES. ADVICES seems to be legitimate. 3. 956 = (100+9)*9 - 25 4. JOUSTER/JOSTLER 5. NUMBERS 6. 873 = (2*50+6)*8 + 25 7. CHERRIES. Had a good think about CHERRIEST. Started with CHESTIER. 8. 289 = (9+6-4)*3*9 - 8 9. ADRENALIN - 2.6s. Actually got this quicker, but hesitated, probably due to lack of certainty on correct doubling.
I'm guessing Mike's round 8 "6" should have been "(6 + 4)" instead. Also, excellent work to get SUPERMAN, Mike. I went one better with PENUMBRAS, though. :)
CHESTIER turns out to be listed, happily. I went with its anagram HERETICS instead, but also noted CHERRIES and CHERRIEST*.
Sam: I spotted ADVICES, but only after time; I agree it should be fine. Embarrassingly, my six was ADVISE.
Hey Geoff and Sam. I don't know what happened with round 8. I immediately went for a 9*32+1 solution (in my notes) and cannot explain what happened there. I could have got that with 9*4*8+9/6+3 fairly easily.
Glad to get SUPERMAN as I'm a big fan of the old George Reeves series. In fact, when I was in LA last year, I got to meet Jack Larson who played the original Jimmy Olsen in that series. Big thrill for me.
Well done on PENUMBRAS Geoff. Have not heard of that one. And I would not have thought CHERRIEST was a word, although I love it.
And was there anything better than a 6 on round one? Just seemed there should have been.
