NG 653

New game 653 is now available.

Round 1: F R N A I E C A D

I had FAIR, FAINER, FINER, FIANCÉ, FANCIER, and AFRAID.

The eight here is RADIANCE.  The other sevens are FANCIED, CAIRNED, FARADIC, and CARINAE (plural of CARINA: "Botany, Zoology a keel-like part or ridge") / ACARINE (adjective derived from ACARID: "any animal belonging to the Acari (or Acarina), an order of arachnids including the mites, ticks, etc.").

My selection: FANCIER

Round 2: R O I N A E S T K

I had IRON, ARISEN, and NOTARISE / NOTARIES / SEÑORITA.

The other eights are KERATINS / NARKIEST*.

My selection: NOTARISE

Round 3: Target 997 from 100 7 2 8 2 10

Clearly one wants to start with 10*100, and there's a few ways to get the remaining 3.  I went with 997 = 10*100 - 7 + 2 + 2.

My selection: 997 = 10*100 - 7 + 2 + 2

Round 4: W L H O S A D B U

I had HOWL, HOWLS, and SHOULD.

BUSLOAD is not in the Macquarie, so six is the limit.  The other sixes are SHADOW, DOULAS (DOULA: "a woman experienced in childbirth, who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to a new mother [...]"), and DOWLAS ("a coarse linen fabric originally used for clothing in the 16th century") / WOALDS (WOALD being another name for WELD, in the sense of a particular plant used in dying).

My selection: SHOULD

Round 5: O N E I A M R N G

I had AEON, ANOMIE ("a social vacuum marked by the absence of social norms or values"), MANNER, MEANING, MOANING, and ROAMING.  A while after time I noted down MORNING as another seven, and from that saw ENAMORING.  However, as I've mentioned before, the Macquarie does not list a verb sense of ENAMOR (or ENAMOUR) -- it only has ENAMORED (or ENAMOURED).

There is a nine, though: OMNIRANGE ("a radionavigation system in which a pilot can select any position relative to a high frequency ground transmitter, whose signal can be used to help plot course or position").  And the eight in this mix is RENAMING.

My selection: MEANING
Best: OMNIRANGE

Round 6: Target 552 from 50 25 75 10 9 5

I put aside the 10 and 5 to make the 2, and then tried to get to 550 with the rest.  Fortunately it was possible, giving me 552 = 9*50 + 75 + 25 + 10/5.

After time I looked at the factorisation 8*69 and managed to make this work: 552 = (5 + 75/25)*(50 + 10 + 9).

My selection: 552 = 9*50 + 75 + 25 + 10/5

Round 7: U S S D E I E T P

I had SUDS, ISSUED, TISSUED, DEPUTIES / DEPUTISE, and DEPUTISES.  Woohoo!

The other eights are DISPUTES and DESPITES / SIDESTEP.  The other sevens are DISPUTE, DESPITE, DESPISE, DEPUTES, STUDIES, UPSIDES, and STUPIDS (STUPID as a noun: "a stupid person").

My selection: DEPUTISES

Round 8: Target 591 from 50 4 3 10 9 2

Definitely time for the standard method, and I opted for 591 = 3*4*50 - 9.

My selection: 591 = 3*4*50 - 9

Round 9: DIGS DUETS

My selection: [N/A -- chosen]
Best: DISGUSTED

1. RADIANCE
2. NOTARISE
3. 997 = 10*100 + 8/2 - 7
4. ? BUSLOAD
5. RENAMING. Hmm, OMNIRANGE.
6. 552 = 9*50 + 75 + 25 + 10/5
7. DEPUTISES. DISPUTEES is invalid.
8. 591 = 3*4*50 - 9
9. DISGUSTED - 6.8s. This felt like a slow time, I might have been distracted, or I dwelt too long on -IEST.
