NG 729

New game 729 is now available.

The re-run is episode 442; its rounds are here and its writeup is here.

Round 1: F L S E R E H A T

I had SELF, FREES, FLEERS (FLEER being both "someone who flees" and a verb meaning "to grin or laugh coarsely or mockingly"), FALTERS, FATHERS, LATHERS, LEATHERS, and FEATHERS.

The other eights are REFLATES (REFLATE: "to increase the amount of money and credit in circulation by relaxing government controls over economic restriction") and HALTERES (HALTERE: "one of a pair of modified hind wings of a fly (order Diptera) reduced to slender, club-shaped appendages, used for balancing in flight; balancer").

My selection: FEATHERS

Round 2: E O G C M T U I G

I had COME, COMET, and GOMUTI (a type of palm tree).

Six is the limit here, with the other being MOGGIE.

My selection: GOMUTI

Round 3: Target 844 from 25 50 10 7 4 9

My first instinct was to start with 11*75, but somehow I overlooked 844 = (7 + 4)*(50 + 25) + 10 + 9.  A strange oversight!  Instead, I switched tacks for 10*84 + 4, getting 844 = (50 + 25 + 9)*10 + 4.

My selection: 844 = (50 + 25 + 9)*10 + 4

Round 4: E L O S I R T D U

I had SOLE, ROILS, TOILERS, SOLDIER, OUTSIDE / TEDIOUS, LOUDEST, OUTSIDER, and wondered about STUDLIER (not valid).  After time I checked up on OUTRIDES, and it is valid.

The other eights are OUTLIERS, SOLITUDE / TOLUIDES (certain chemicals), and DILUTERS.

My selection: OUTSIDER

Round 5: E B A C N E R P I

I had CANE, CRANE, PRANCE, CARBINE, and PERINEA (plural of PERINEUM).  I was also amused by picturing a BEER PANIC.

The remaining seven is CARBEEN (another name for the Moreton Bay ash).

My selection: CARBINE

Round 6: Target 973 from 100 2 5 7 6 2

Applying the standard method suggests starting from 1000, and a small tweak sorted it out: 973 = 2*5*(100 - 2) - 7.

My selection: 973 = 2*5*(100 - 2) - 7

Round 7: O A E L M T K O B

I had ALOE, METAL, rightly rejected MEALBOOK, LOBATE ("having a lobe or lobes"), and BOOKLET.  After time I noted TOMBOLA as another seven.

MOOTABLE is not listed, so seven is the best to be done, and they've all been listed.

My selection: BOOKLET

Round 8: Target 934 from 75 9 2 9 1 8

I flailed around for a little, and managed to get to one away with 935 = (9 + 2)*(75 + 9 + 1).

It turns out that the target is unreachable, so one away is the best to be done.

My selection: 935 = (9 + 2)*(75 + 9 + 1)

Round 9: TORN RIVET

The OVER- fragment was not that helpful, so I looked at INTER-.  That was not right either, but put me on the right path to find INTROVERT.

My selection: INTROVERT (10.2s)

(50+25+9)*10+4=844

(100-2)*(5*2)-7=973

(75+9+1)*(9+2)=935 (1 off)

FLASHER
COMET
(7+4)*(50+75)-10-9=844 (went over)
SOURED and DUSTIER just over
PACIER? and the safer PINCER just over
x-error in transcribing but meant 2*5*100-((6+7)*2)=974 (1 off)
BOOKLET (over)
(9+1)*(75+9*2)=930 (4 off, over)
INTROVERT (111s)

Some good overtime answers, Mike, though your Round 3 transcription is a mess.

1. FEATHERS
2. MOGGIE
3. one off: 845 = (10+7)*50 - 9 + 4
4. OUTLIERS
5. CARBINE
6. 973 = (2*100 - 7)*5 + 6 + 2
7. BLAME
8. nothing in time
9. 57.2s - INTROVERT

Sam, I did get Round 3 but the transcription was as you describe. It should have read (7+4)*(50+25)+10+9=844.

Looks like I'll be a bit late with this writeup, so here were my results:

1. FEATHERS
2. GOMUTI (a type of palm tree)
3. 844 = (50 + 25 + 9)*10 + 4
4. OUTSIDER
5. CARBINE
6. 973 = 2*5*(100 - 2) - 7
7. BOOKLET (nearly missed this; had LOBATE prior to spotting it)
8. 935 = (9 + 2)*(75 + 9 + 1) [1 off]
9. INTROVERT (10.2s)
