At least no 5s today.
TRAINING
ROTTING
(4+2)*(75+7+1+1)=504 (3 off) and then reasonably quickly after time Louise's second way
BLOOMS
MOOCHER
9*50-100-8-4=338 (1 off) and then after time Louise's way
PASSED (wish I'd seen WAISTED)
Louise's way (yet again!)
x should have got that, especially looking for the -ING words first up
Nice work with OBOIST, Louise -- I'd have guessed it was spelled OBOEIST, but apparently not. The Macquarie tends to be weak on adjectives formed by -ED, but WAISTED does get an explicit mention -- another good find from you.
Mike: I'm guessing you meant TRAINED in round 1, with the -ING being a typo due to the second round. It sounds like your numbers rounds are going reasonably well, just need to get there a bit faster.
Thanks Geoff, yes, I had TRAINED written down.
Geoff, your Round 6 approach requires a back story.
1. CREATINE/DECANTER/CANTERED. Felt there might have been a nine here.
2. ROTTING
3. 501 = (75-4)*7 + 2 + 1 + 1
4. BLOATS
5. MOOCHER
6. 337 = (50+8)*4 + 100 + 9-4
7. PASTIES
8. 377 = 3*5*25 + 1 + 1
9. PRESIDING - 8.2s. Only tried -ING words, but it didn't jump straight out.
Sam: Heh. Well, it was just one of those things I tried, really. The observation is that 37 is (75 - 1)/2, but 1's and 2's are hard to come by. But we did have 4 and 8, so 37 would be (4*75 - 4)/8, leading to the target being (2700 - 4)/8. 2700 is conveniently divisible by 9, and I was quite happy when the requisite 300 was formable.
Of course, I then also found the solution that Louise used. But I liked the complicated option better!
