Geoff,

I've been meaning to ask you, when you were on the TV show, did you have a video display on the desk in front of you with the numbers or letters that we the audience could not see? When I play your games on computer, particularly the letters, I will often put my fingers over -ED or -ING on the screen, narrowing down the letters to more readily get the longest word I can. When I watch the show on TV I do the same with my hands outstretched. I guess you couldn't do that on the show!

Yes, there was a small TV screen set into the desk; this was a direct feed from a camera that was always pointed at the board (or such is my recollection), except for the conundrum which was piped in separately.

Many contestants write down letters as they are called out, since this lets them organise them in ways that make sense to them. Occasionally we would see some of those contestants use their fingers to blot out parts of the paper, presumably for the same reasons that you described.

1. ANTIHERO
2. TRACTION
3. 952 = (6 + 6 + 7)*50 + 8/4
4. FILIAL
5. FURORS (variant spelling of FURORES)
6. 448 = (7 + 1)*(4 + 4)*7
7. MEERKATS
8. 281 = 4*50 + 75 + 10 - 100/25
9. [no answer, but it is CHILBLAIN]
