NG 414

New game 414 is now available.

Round 1: C P E O K G N A I

I had COPE, CAKING, PECKING, PEAKING, and COINAGE

The other sevens are PACKING and APNOEIC (adjective derived from APNOEA: "suspension of respiration").

My selection: COINAGE

Round 2: U R E D O A C Q S

I had RUDE, CRUDE, and CAROUSED.  Computer types might note QUAD CORES, but it's not something that is listed.  After time I noted SCOURED and SQUARED as other sevens.

CAROUSED looks like the only eight.  The other sevens are CAROUSE / ACEROUS (variant form of ACEROSE: "needle-shaped, as the leaves of the pine"), AROUSED, COURSED / SOURCED, CRUSADE, and CASQUED (adjective derived from CASQUE: "Poetic a helmet").

My selection: CAROUSED

Round 3: Target 816 from 50 25 100 10 7 7

I struggled a lot with this one, finding it hard to come up with an approach.  I flailed around and tweaked my way up from 7*100 to get to one off with 816 = 7*(100 + 10 + 7) - 50/25.  For some reason the factorisation 8*102 never occured to me, but it would not have worked in any case.

After time I realised that the target could be 875 - 7*7 - 10, leading to a solution of 816 = 7*(100 + 25 - 7) - 10.  There's only one other solution, using the factorisation 12*68: 816 = (7 + 50/10)*(100 - 25 - 7).

My selection: 817 = 7*(100 + 10 + 7) - 50/25  [1 off]
Best: 816 = 7*(100 + 25 - 7) - 10

Round 4: D U R T E E L D J

I had TURD, TRUE, ÉTUDE, JUDDER, and DETRUDE.

The other seven is DELUDER.  The other sixes are DELUDE / DUELED / ELUDED, ELUDER / DUELER*, REDDLE ("to colour coarsely"), RUDDLE (variant form of RADDLE: "a red variety of ochre, used especially to mark sheep for identification"), and ELUTED (ELUTE: "Chemistry in chromatography, etc., to remove by dissolving, as absorbed material from an adsorbent") / TELEDU ("a small badger-like mammal [...]").

My selection: DETRUDE

Round 5: S M A I C E F S A

I had AIMS, FACIES ("a general appearance of something naturally occurring, as a particular flora, fauna or ecological community"), and FASCIAE (plural of FASCIA: "a long flat board covering the ends of rafters").

The other sevens are FASCISM and CAMASES (CAMAS being a variant spelling of CAMASS, a type of lily).

My selection: FASCIAE

Round 6: Target 857 from 25 2 6 1 3 10

Again I struggled, and eventually decided to try and get close with 3*286, leading to 858 = 3*((25 + 2 + 1)*10 + 6) for one away.

It turns out that the target is unreachable, and one off is the best to be done.

My selection: 858 = 3*((25 + 2 + 1)*10 + 6)  [1 off]

Round 7: R U I E L O A M S

I had LURE, MIAOUS, ARMIES, REALISM, and SOLARIUM.

The other eights are MORALISE and RAMULOSE ("having many small branches").  The other sevens are MAULERS, MOUSIER, LOUSIER, LOAMIER*, MOILERS, MISRULE, SIMULAR ("somone or something that simulates"), MORULAE (plural of MORULA: "the mass of cells, supposedly resembling a mulberry, resulting from the cleavage of the ovum before the formation of a blastula"), UREMIAS (UREMIA being a variant spelling of URAEMIA: "the morbid condition resulting from the retention of urinary constituents"), and maybe MORALES.

My selection: SOLARIUM

Round 8: Target 778 from 25 50 2 8 9 10

Finally an easy numbers round: 778 = (50 + 25 + 2)*10 + 8.

My selection: 778 = (50 + 25 + 2)*10 + 8

Round 9: MUD ORACLE

After pulling out the -ED, I was able to unscramble the rest to find CLAMOUR and thus the answer of CLAMOURED.

My selection: CLAMOURED (2.4s)

PEAKING
COURSED
10+7/7*(50+25)=825 (9 off and went over time)
DELUDER (went over time but invalid anyway)
FACES (kicked myself for not getting FASCIAE which I picked only a few games ago)
10*(3*25+6*2-1)=860 (3 off)
MAILERS s(presumably invalid not being in the write up. Loved SOLARIUM)
10*(25+50+2)+8=778
x rushed in with invalid DECLAMOUR and then realised it was CLAMOURED.

DELUDER was ok I see...

I got FASCIAE in my L&N book, not here.

FASCIAE is an excellent find, Mike, even if it was with the books rather than here. (It's turned up a few times as an option in the official games, I think, including the very first episode.)

Bad luck about MAILERS, but at least DELUDER was fine. And COURSED is also a good spot.
